Question by quepasameng: Why don’t used car dealers take care of the cars they sell?
Like seriously. All the used car dealers i have been to. The oil has been black, the cars have been dirty, and there was always something to repair that would have not cost them a lot to do themselves. Why is this? Do people think a car with minor repairs needed makes the car more negotiable, that way they think they are getting a good deal when they are not? Does dirt hide imperfections?

actually there are not much legal documents needed, just your MyKad. The best way is to ask your parents, relative or friends who has a cheque. Yes, of course you can pay by cash and ask for a receipt, but using cheque issued to the second hand car dealer is another safety. The second hand car dealer can do insurance and go to JPJ to transfer the ownership to your name. Just ask your parents anybody you know who is also firmilair with car to do a check on that car. If i were you I’ll drive the car to a mechanic that you know to inspect the car and ask them to estimate the value of the car too.

Question by argo: Will a car dealer buy a car with the check engine light on?
I plan on trading in a car that has the check engine light on. How much of a problem will the dealer give me? How in depth will they check the problem? Will they give me less gruff if I am buying a new car?

I took it to a midas and they said the O2 sensors were out, and all 4 had to be replaced. He also said that the converter was burnt because of this (which doesn’t make much sense. He said it dumps gas in the converter and burns it out, but i’ve had better gas milage since the check engine light went on!). So, will the code just say an O2 needs to be replaced?

Your car dealership business plan should follow a standard business plan outline, offering few surprises in this regard. A few areas stand out as specific needs for a car dealer to persuade readers to invest in or lend to the company.

Experience

The auto dealership business is a tough one, featuring thin gross profit margins, high initial startup costs, and heavy negotiation from customers. Best advice don’t negotiate. Research the car prices for the cars you want. Set in you mind what you want to pay. Tell the dealer I want the car at this price or not at all. Resist all other offers. Leave if necessary leave him your phone number if he is willing to meet your price. Within a month you will have a new car at a decent price

1) if you are treated right a the dealer.
2) I have gone to a dealer and wanted to buy a Jeep Wrangler (new) they were not willing to discount the price of the jeep, but were offering me 4000 below kbb for my car. I walked out insulted and will never go back to that dealer again.
3) good service and a fair price.
4) honest service.
I bought a ford truck(new) which came with tires for life, great incentive to buy there. Only to find out that your tires needed to be almost absent of tread to get your new tires. So that great incentive was worth squat. never go back to that dealer.
5) sales people that are at a dealership for a while and remember you when you return.
6) Do not tell your customer that you will have to wholesale the car that they are trading in and have it sittling on your lot the day later. You are insulting the customer and are not being honest.

I live in El Paso and she should buy the daily newspaper and look in there. There are lots of used car dealers, but I would go to a dealership if I were her. I think she could also log on to Autotrader.com and type in the zip code and it will show cars in that area.
I just got a new car a few months ago from the Hyundai dealership on Montana Avenue and it was a good experience for me.

Dealers usually maintain a tight relationship with their lenders and will not freely release this information to you. Plus the lender will not want to go behind their back because they could lose a lot of future business.

But if another dealer has the relationship with the same bank, you’ll most likely be approved again, when you reapply.

Dealers are a great place to spend your paycheck but do you need use a dealer for this? Won’t a local repair shop work for you?

Why would a used car dealer or anyone that sells multiple cars hide the fact that they have other cars for sale? Most of the ads of cars for sale are too good to be true and I stay away from them but what do they hide by showing they are for sale by owner?

I have used Craig’s List to find a used car and some deals are too good to be true and I hate to see young folks buy these reconditioned cars that CARFAX can’t list because of the laws in 29 of the 50 states not making it mandatory to list wrecked or totaled cars.

Because “curbstoners” as they are called want to avoid paying taxes; avoid paying for a license (required if you sell over a certain number a year); avoid laws such as inspecting cars to make sure they are roadworthy; etc.

Most of the unbelievable deals on Craigslist are not from curbstoners but from con-artists. Most of these cars do not exist at all. They just convince unsuspecting buyers to send them cash through Western Union and of course they dissapear.

The probem with credit is only for those people with sub-prime credit scores (below about 680-700). People with good credit are not having trouble getting loans. Unfortunately, a large percentage of people who got loans before the credit crunch had credit issues and probably should not have been buying the cars they were buying. Car manufacturers were so eager for the business that they were approving almost anyone. Now they are suffering because a large number of those people are now defaulting on their loans.

How Do Car Dealerships Make Money?

Car dealerships make money from three primary revenue streams within a dealership. This article will explain the basics and provide you with general information that pertains to most all car lots.

Front End Profits

This is profit made on the sale of a vehicle. Whether a vehicle is financed through a loan company or if you pay cash, the dealership’s front end profit is unaffected.

Front end profit is the difference between the sale price of a vehicle and the dealers actual cost. In addition, dealers make money from manufacturer’s incentives, dealer “holdback” (a percentage of the invoice cost, paid to the dealer by the manufacturer) and rebates, if retained by the dealership.

The front end profit is what car salesman are paid their commissions from, which is commonly 25%, referred to in the industry as “gross”.

Back End Profits

This is profit that is made from brokering the financing for a vehicle sale in addition to various finance products.

I’m not trying to be sarcastic, but if you have to ask you’re nowhere near ready. The pros in the business would eat you up and spit you out. Once in awhile some green pea buys his way into the business. With no clue about how to buy he buys wrong. The pros smell his weakness and he gets led into failure. He goes to the auction and bids against the Coke machine. He is so naive that he falls victim to every shyster and buys any turd that shines. You want to be a dealer? Work for one. Then work with one. When you’re experienced at buying you will know what you need to get your own license. Remember; anybody can sell, but only an experienced professional buyer can buy with any success. With my experience I still get burnt occasionally as I bid at the sale. New tricks are developed daily. Now, go get a job at a used car operation.

You’ll need to fund the entire amount of operating capital (3-6 months) and inventory yourself. No bank or Credit Union will finance a used dealership. The successful ones that I’ve seen were all funded by wealthy owners/investors. As far as how much capital, you’ll need to project that yourself (if you can’t, you’re not cut out to be an entrepreneur). Look at places to rent, what electric, phone, and other utilities will cost each month, and how many employees you’ll need (if any). However, if you need a loan to do all this, don’t get your hopes up because no one does them. Best of luck!

It may depend when they cut the checks. A small dealership may only have 1 person who does the accounting and it may take he/she a week or two. I think that leagally you are okay and that they assumed the loan under the contracts you signed when you bought your new car. I have bought about 10 cars from dealership and it seems that it takes about two weeks.

Car dealers don’t finance, they contract out to finance companies for that. They usually have several they work with, and can typically find one that will work with your bad credit, the trade off is you’ll pay a much higher interest rate.

Is there any reason for someone to get a bank car loan rather than dealing directly and completely with the car dealership? Really it is not an argument of which place you should get your loan through such as a bank or going through the car dealership, but what is going to be the fairest deal. You will find that some places such as online car financing are not always truthful about your actual credit scores. In fact some may fudge the numbers a little. Three of my buddies and I want to buy New Audi A4s when we return from deployment in Afghanistan. They won’t lower the MSRP; that stands for Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price. The dealer can charge whatever they want for it; higher or lower than the MSRP. The dealer will probably offer a discount if four cars will be sold.

Dealers already compete. It is not like you can only shop at the dealer closest to you. The dealer that has the best price wins.

It’s getting tougher to get your dealer’s license. I’m licensed in Fl., and you have to have an “approved retail site,” attend a few classes, pass a test, post a sizeable bond, and hang out a shingle. Unless you’re seriously committed to it, it isn’t worth it. It can be a very rewarding profession, and I really have enjoyed it. It certainly helps to be well capitalized, especially when starting out. You’ll find that money just seems to vanish for the first five years. The best recipe for success is L.U.C.K! I bought a car at a big dealership in CA in Dec. 06. Currently, I am still waiting on new tags because the dealership has yet to recieve the title from the previous owner’s bank. My bank is still waiting on the title, and recently, I have refinanced with a new bank who is also waiting on the title. My question is, I have waited almost 5 months for my registration, is what the dealership doing legal? I have called and visited the dealership many times, and each time the only answer I get is that they’re still trying to call the bank. Is it legal for a CA dealership to sell me a car they don’t have the title to? What can I do to speed the process (I plan on moving out of state in Jun)? What will happen when I do move? Should I get a lawyer involved? Thank you.

It is the California DMV that issues vehicle registrations and titles in the state, as well as maintaining the official vehicle ownership and registration records in California.

Beyond establishing the legally registered owner during the sale of a vehicle, the California DMV also takes on the responsibility of regulating and issuing the decals, or tags, that prove that a California vehicle’s registration and paperwork are current. Registration renewals require proof of financial liability, most often in the form of adequate auto insurance.

To be issued a new title in your name, you’ll need to visit your local DMV office. For shorter lines, first make an appointment. Bring with you:

California Certificate of Title OR Request for Duplicate Title. Either must be endorsed by the buyer, seller, and any lienholder.
Odometer disclosure for cars less than 10 years old (there is space for this on the title).
Smog certificate (if applicable).
All applicable fees, including a title transfer fee.

You should have received it before the 21 day temporary ran out. This might just be an error by the dealer…call them and ask. If you cant get it straightened out with them, call you nearest dmv office and they can help you.

Yea, they can do it.

Have you noticed that dealership do not put that junk on floor room cars? They do it while being prepped for the customer after the purchase.

I always tell them … none of that crap on my car and put it in writting. They ALWAYS comply. If the customer doesn’t insist, they do it automatically.

The car should have been inspected by the dealer at the time of sale at which point the tint issue should have been discovered. It wouldn’t hurt to try to shake a few bucks from the dealer.

I am thinking of getting a 95 Cadillac Seville STS. Seems like a nice car. It drives well anyway. It is from a small dealership and a friend said that I should watch out for small dealers because they can typically do things like put saw dusat in the transmission or heavy gear oil in the crank case to allow the car to get a few extra miles out of it so it can sold faster and at a higher rate. Anyone ever heard of anything else I should look for?

Be sure and check the vin# on this car for wrecks, water damage, etc. And be sure to check sources to make sure what the car is worth. This car is 12 years old, so it’s not gonna be perfect. Most new car dealerships probably wouldn’t have this car on the lot because of the age, so it might not be a bad car. Just have a mechanic check it out. Good luck!

I recently purchased a car. After a few weeks of getting everything in to get financing approved the dealer has now called and said that the APR was a promotion for a 2007 model and they sold me a 2008. No, I think it is time to report what is called “Bait and switch” to the appropriate authorities.
The dealer pulled pulling a switch on you after they baited you (and sunk the hook real good).

I want to know the complete details or where to get them about applying and getting a car dealers license in MN. I don’t really want to pay a lot of money and sign up for one of those creepy websites to send me a bunch of tapes and whatever. I don’t mind going and buying a book. I really would like to get my dealers license for fun but i hear its a lot of work and you have to have a lot of money or know someone that has one to give you some pointers. Thanks for any help and/or answers to this one.

Where can I find out what the dealership actually pays for a car (new and used) so I can see what kind of leverage I have when negotiating a price on a new car? I refuse to go into a dealership again without knowing all the facts so I don’t get screwed by their high sticker price! Thanks!

Used cars are just a wild guess. The dealer may have bought it at an auction, or may have taken it in as a trade-in car, and have absolutely no money invested in it.

If you’re uncomfortable with your negotiating skills, you might do well to either deal with set-price dealers (Carmax, Saturn) or take someone along who is more savvy with negotiating skills.

Green Car Dealerships

Green car dealerships sell various types of ‘green cars’ or environmental friendly cars. There are 16 green car dealerships in 10 states in the United States of America. The dealers are also converting their dealerships into green areas. The main idea is to use less water, less energy and use environmental friendly processes in a place with a lot of green space.

People at first thought that it would not be possible for car dealership to go green. Then the LEED voluntary rating system came into existence. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This has been set up by the US Green Building Council to recognize buildings that are environmental friendly in their custom, design and operations. Gensler was the first to design a car dealership to register for a LEED rating. The rating is given according to the indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency that is met by the dealership. The ratings are – Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. This rating system provides a uniform manner of measuring a building’s sustainability. Many car dealerships have followed this initiative and have gone green. There are at least 16 green dealerships in the United States.

The green car dealership follows certain architectural practices. These include having the outside of the building being made of 80% recycled aluminum, when heat is needed, it comes from oil change waste, the car wash uses recycled water, taps, lighting that conserves energy and the carpet is made of recycled windshield glass. Alternative means of transport is shown preference, by having bicycle racks and preference for parking for people who carpool. Rainwater is used and plants that do not need much water such as drought resistant plants and grass are grown. This type of green car dealership proves that it is possible for people to go green if they just put their mind to it. In the future there is a possibility that this initiative will pick up and many major companies will go green.

R&B Auto Center, located in Fontana, CA is the first Pre Owned car Dealership to go green. R&B Auto Center’s has installed beautiful rockwork and Eco-Alliance Artificial Grass throughout the dealership and playground, all of this in an effort to conserve one of earths most valuable resources, water. R&B Auto Center has retrofitted most of the lighting fixtures with energy efficient lighting to conserve energy. Recycling is a way of life for all employees at R&B Auto Center. Recycling bins are placed throughout the dealership for paper, plastic and aluminum. R&B Auto Center’s Service department recycles used oil, tires, and metal.

Becoming A Used Car Dealer – Much Harder Than You Think

Before even scheduling to venture into the used car dealer business, you have the choice to start small and sell a few cars or choose to go bigger as a used car dealer and maybe a used car wholesaler. To start with, a visit to the licensing bureau is recommended.

To be doing well in this line of work, you have to know the ins and outs of the business. First you must develop a knowing eye that can effectively look for the negative sides of a used car. Important things to consider are the paintwork, to even the frame damage of a car, which may be due to an accident. Any dealer would tell you that they have acquired their proficiency of the trade by way of experience such as inspecting cars by crawling inside, or under the car, over the car, and then driving it and devising schemes to determine the value of a used car.

The used car business is very tricky. It eats-up a lot of your time just learning the language of the trade. There is a whole bunch of related aspects, like how to select a quality and mechanically sound vehicle if the wholesale price is acceptable. You must then reconsider, given an expected margin of profit, would it be wise to buy the car now and sell it later. How much will be spent reconditioning the car to command a really satisfying price? All these relevant questions could be given meaning, only if you are involved in the used car business.

For a lot of people they do not have the time to go into learning the tricks, the trades, and the language that all come with owning a used car dealership . We would highly recommend that if your not 100% serious in putting in your time, than you are better off just quickly unloading your car for some easy and quick cash. Why go through all that paper work, learning the tricks, figure out what or where the deals are. People quickly find themselves well over their heads, and 9 out 10 times getting completely taken from in the used car business.

The process of reconditioning the cars start at repair bays. The used car dealer will have to deal with labor, equipment, car parts, car ovens and repainting, mechanical repairs to make the vehicles in tip-top condition before they get displayed in showrooms. You also have to deal with financing companies to arrange for easy purchase deals with buyers. There is also the case of trade-ins, or buyers needing your reconditioned cars in exchange for their old ones. Having picky buyers will also be an added aspect you must deal with. So before you decide to make it big in the used car industry, reconsider all of the little things that make’s this a business hard to run.

Question by phildisus: Can car dealers refuse to do warranty work?
I have a 2007 Chevy Aveo with 8800 miles and I need a new throttle. I have been waiting for the part to come in since 7-11 and was told the part takes 3-5 working days to arrive. I keep getting the run around from everyone in the service dept. I read that car dealers can refuse to fix your car even if it is under warranty. Can they do this? and is there a criteria on why the can?

No, they cant. If if it is covered under warranty, then they have to fix the car or replace it under the lemon law. However, you need to make sure that the throttle cable is covered under warranty. I know it is because its still under the 36000 mile manufacturers warranty. Take it back and tell them you want to talk to owner of the dealership and then call chevrolet. Best yet, get a lawyer. But i dont know why your getting the run around, they have to fix it.

A dealer swap. If the Chevy dealer you are shopping at doesn’t have the car you want but one Chevy dealer in a nearby city does they will make a deal to swap inventory so they can sell you the car you want.

This doesn’t cost you anything. What it costs the dealer is irrelevant.
