Question by rubberducky75: Can a car dealer change their mind about giving you a loan after you have signed a contract?
My friend bought a car and has her financing contract. The dealer called today and said they needed more verification of her income, and that they were coming to get the car. Can they do that?

I don’t think so. If a contract is signed, then both parties are bound to it.
I once forced a dealer to honor an extended warranty on a used car I bought. They came back and told me they made a typo. I told them “tough luck, it’s in the contract”. They still tried to screw me over, so I got the BBB involved. That pretty much took care of it.

Question by argo: Will a car dealer buy a car with the check engine light on?
I plan on trading in a car that has the check engine light on. How much of a problem will the dealer give me? How in depth will they check the problem? Will they give me less gruff if I am buying a new car?

I took it to a midas and they said the O2 sensors were out, and all 4 had to be replaced. He also said that the converter was burnt because of this (which doesn’t make much sense. He said it dumps gas in the converter and burns it out, but i’ve had better gas milage since the check engine light went on!). So, will the code just say an O2 needs to be replaced?

Question by Kael Bass: How to start up a used car dealership?
I would like to start a used car dealership. If you have experience and want to share your success and failures, I need to know how much capital is the minimum to start and all other related expenses, government etc. Thanks in advance!

You’ll need to fund the entire amount of operating capital (3-6 months) and inventory yourself. No bank or Credit Union will finance a used dealership. The successful ones that I’ve seen were all funded by wealthy owners/investors. As far as how much capital, you’ll need to project that yourself (if you can’t, you’re not cut out to be an entrepreneur). Look at places to rent, what electric, phone, and other utilities will cost each month, and how many employees you’ll need (if any). However, if you need a loan to do all this, don’t get your hopes up because no one does them. Best of luck!
