For criminal acts, file a police report and a complaint with the BBB to warn others. Sometimes merely a cordial but persuasive letter from an attorney’s office will motivate a scammer to set things straight.

Question by addg23: Why do car dealers give you so much less for a trade and then turn it around to make so much more?
I’ve seen dealers give you way less for a car that’s been well maintained and then turn to sell it for up to $ 5000.00 more. What’s a good trade price when comparing on the Kelly Blue Book prices under TRADE vs PRIVATE SELL vs RETAIL?

The dealers have something called a Black Book as opposed to the Blue Book, this is how they know what the trade value of the vehicle is. Unless you are a registered dealer you will not be able to gain access to this kind of info. The answer to your first question is that car dealers are in business to make money. Unless you are a skilled negotiator I would suggest that you just sell your car on the street and get the best you can for it. Even if you get a dealer to give you a higher trade in value for your car, they will get that money somewhere else in the contract for the sale of your new vehicle. It is a game on numbers. The best time to purchase a car from a dealer is at the end of the month, or at the end of the year. They are generally willing to take more of a loss then and complete the sale. If you feel that you are not getting the deal you want get up and walk away from the table. Until you sign the contract you are not obligated to go through with the deal! Good Luck!

Question by TBONE: Do car dealers replace gas when repairs are done?
When a car dealer does work on your fuel system and has to remove the gas in the tank, do they replace it? Specifically Chevy dealers.

They should return the gas removed from the tank after the repair is complete, unless it is contaminated. I seriously doubt that they would take your car to a gas station and replace any fuel that they used or spilled during a repair.

It’s been over 3 months and the car dealership that I bought my car from won’t send me the registration. What can I do? Can I make them take the car back because they haven’t held up their end of the contract?

They can hold the title and usually do if you owe money on the car. The registration you get from the DMV when you get your plates…

I often wonder how a used car dealer values a car on his lot. Does he just pull a price out of the air and hope someone pays him that or is there a precise algorithm he uses?

Question by argo: Will a car dealer buy a car with the check engine light on?
I plan on trading in a car that has the check engine light on. How much of a problem will the dealer give me? How in depth will they check the problem? Will they give me less gruff if I am buying a new car?

I took it to a midas and they said the O2 sensors were out, and all 4 had to be replaced. He also said that the converter was burnt because of this (which doesn’t make much sense. He said it dumps gas in the converter and burns it out, but i’ve had better gas milage since the check engine light went on!). So, will the code just say an O2 needs to be replaced?

Question by Masshole: Are car dealers allowed to permanently engrave their dealership logo into the back of a car?
I’ve noticed this on a lot of cars, and I’m not a big fan of it.
I’ve also noticed that some car dealers make the car owners use a license plate frame provided by the dealership — why do the car owners allow this? (I know I wouldn’t)

Yea, they can do it.
Have you noticed that dealership do not put that junk on floor room cars? They do it while being prepped for the customer after the purchase.
I always tell them … none of that crap on my car and put it in writting. They ALWAYS comply. If the customer doesn’t insist, they do it automatically.
