Question by manw/thegoldengun: How much of a return do car dealers expect to get on repairs to trade-ins they sell?
I am interested in a 20 year old car that has only 75K on it. The dealer has shown me the paper-work for the repairs they did to the vehicle ($ 1100). They are asking $ 3900 for the vehicle, the salesmen told me the higher price is due to the low miles and recent repairs. NADA has a clean retail listed as $ 2500. I also checked similar prices for cars of the same make model etc. (avg $ 2450).

It’s usually BS. Most dealers just do driveability repairs (alignment, tires, wheels, possibly cv joints, etc.) but don’t really do heavy repairs or replace aftermarket parts with oem parts in the case of modified vehicles. Also…any repairs are in house and hence don’t really cost them as much as the retail price quoted.
Tell him you’ll pay $ 2450 not a dime more; if he doesn’t bite buy it from a private party. YOU don’t pay for repairs, they come from the original owner as a reduction in value of their trade in.

Question by Give more…: What advantages do used car dealers have when they sell a car as owner?
Why would a used car dealer or anyone that sells multiple cars hide the fact that they have other cars for sale? Most of the ads of cars for sale are too good to be true and I stay away from them but what do they hide by showing they are for sale by owner?
I have used Craig’s List to find a used car and some deals are too good to be true and I hate to see young folks buy these reconditioned cars that CARFAX can’t list because of the laws in 29 of the 50 states not making it mandatory to list wrecked or totaled cars.

Because “curbstoners” as they are called want to avoid paying taxes; avoid paying for a license (required if you sell over a certain number a year); avoid laws such as inspecting cars to make sure they are roadworthy; etc.
Most of the unbelievable deals on Craigslist are not from curbstoners but from con-artists. Most of these cars do not exist at all. They just convince unsuspecting buyers to send them cash through Western Union and of course they dissapear.

Question by Spamela: What do you do when both a car dealer and manufacturer dismiss a customer complaint?
Car dealer says the excessive vibration and bumpy ride of my 2005 Acura TL is “characteristic” of the car and there’s nothing they can do to fix it. Acura corporate says the same thing. The 2007 model of the car had a fix to the problem (which they’re not admitting was a problem in the first place), but they will only switch cars if I pay them ,000. Does a lemon law apply to something that the dealer says is not a problem? Not sure what to do next… This has been going on for 18 months and I’m frustrated.
