Question by manw/thegoldengun: How much of a return do car dealers expect to get on repairs to trade-ins they sell?
I am interested in a 20 year old car that has only 75K on it. The dealer has shown me the paper-work for the repairs they did to the vehicle ($ 1100). They are asking $ 3900 for the vehicle, the salesmen told me the higher price is due to the low miles and recent repairs. NADA has a clean retail listed as $ 2500. I also checked similar prices for cars of the same make model etc. (avg $ 2450).

It’s usually BS. Most dealers just do driveability repairs (alignment, tires, wheels, possibly cv joints, etc.) but don’t really do heavy repairs or replace aftermarket parts with oem parts in the case of modified vehicles. Also…any repairs are in house and hence don’t really cost them as much as the retail price quoted.

Tell him you’ll pay $ 2450 not a dime more; if he doesn’t bite buy it from a private party. YOU don’t pay for repairs, they come from the original owner as a reduction in value of their trade in.

You need to contact the District representative for whatever brand your car is. Try going online and finding a Customer Service number. When you finally get a human to talk to tell him the problems you are having. Be sure to have ALL of the previous repair order receipts when you call. He/she will ask you some questions to get the ball rolling on your complaint.

Question by kokom3lb: The car dealership that I bought my car from filed for bankruptcy, will they repo my car?
My car is only 2 yrs old, bought it last year from this dealership and found out today they filed for bankruptcy. Will they repo my car if its not been paid off?

Best answer:

Answer by Ryan M
Depends on who you make your PAYMENTS to. If you make your payments to a bank, then obviously the answer is NO. They can’t repossess something that they have no vested interest in. Lets say that you do make your payments to the dealership, WHY on earth would they repossess the car and void themselves of the cash flow that is your payments? There is probably more value in your payments than in the car. In order to repo a car, YOU must breach the terms of the loan.
